It all started in 11th grade and my 1st trip to Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia.
I am from Berks county & in the 90’s V & S sandwiches was King of the sandwich world. Cheap Hugh sandwiches pilled with enough meat for 2 sandwiches. Served on a local ATV bakery roll! I eat there often and enjoyed it. Then I went to Philly, it was a school
trip. We stopped at Reading Terminal Market, which if you don’t know, it's where the Reading Railroad used to end in Philly. Now it's a HUGH farmers market with dozens of restaurants.
Including a place that had won 1995 best hoagie! I ordered one…..then a second! The bread, the flavor of the meats, the sharp provolone and tang of the vinegar, I was hooked. The problem
was I couldn’t get anything like it in Reading! The V & S of my childhood was ruined, I would try hundreds of places over the years. Never really coming close to that Hoagie.
Fast forward to 2004. I open my 1st business. A pizza shop called Big Cheese Pizza. With the help of a business partner that was from Philly. Our menu included Hoagies. Rolls delivered daily and good quality meats. Not the level of that 1st Philly Hoagie but getting closer. I learned a lot and made thousands of
hoagies. Gracie enters the picture. She starts managing a local coffee shop and bakery . One of her regulars was a Philly guy who grew up with the owners of Primo Hoagies. I had never been
to one but had heard their radio ads for years. Listening to Burnie talk about watching this little local hoagie shop. One of hundreds in Philly grow into a large regional chain. Well I had to try them, it was good, then came Jackson House in Harrisburg,
then Bruno’s, The Grille, Scarcone’s, White House Subs, Antonio’s, Ricci’s, Angelo’s, Tortorice’s, Liberty Kitchen, Cosmi’s and hundreds more that I can’t remember! Along the way we acquired the space that is now the Jimmie’s Thing. We had other plans for it and so did the township. So it sat empty without a plan till the shutdown in December 2020. To help all struggling restaurants Gracie started a takeout page on Facebook that now has also 15k
members. What just happens to be a regular topic on that page…..Where can I get a really good hoagie?
I present to you Jimmie’s Thing I hope you enjoy it!
